Travel and Getting Around

What are my travel options to get to Benone Beach?

Benone Beach is located just 12 miles from Limavady and only 20 miles from the City of Derry Airport. There are regular flights to Derry from most major UK airports. Translink have two train stations convenient to Benone, one at Bellarena and the other at Castlerock and the Translink National Express Bus Service stops on the main road beside the turn to Benone Tourist Complex which is a 5 minute walk to the Surf School.

How to Book, Booking Information and Payments

When is Long Line Surf School and Water Trails open?

Long Line Surf School is open all year round. Surfing courses between March – December and Half Day Lessons only from December – March. We have lessons running seven days a week.

SUP courses between March and October. Private groups can be organized throughout the off season.

How can I book with Long Line Surf School Northern Ireland?

How do I book a Bespoke Package?

Bespoke Packages you will need to call or email. Due to the complexities of these bookings and availability it is not feasible to have online booking.

How do I secure a booking with Long Line Surf School Northern Ireland?

Reserving a place on a surfing or water trails course we ask for a 50% deposit. The remaining balance is due on arrival. booking will not be considered confirmed until the deposit is received and confirmation receipt has been issued.

What’s the best way to pay?

Cash payments are accepted at the beach and when paying by card, you will need to go to our online booking service and pay via our paypal account.

Surf and SUP Courses, Lessons and Holidays

How much does a surf or SUP course cost?

Cost of our courses varies depending on the options you choose. Please see our Price Guide for details of the cost of all our courses. If you can’t find what you’re looking for or would like a bespoke quote please Contact Us.

Where will we be surfing or stand up paddleboarding?

Vast majority of our surfing lessons are held at Benone Beach. We may take you further down towards Downhill if we see more suitable but no matter what we will be on the same beach.

The Stand up paddleboarding beginner lessons will take place on the River Roe. This is where the majority or our Water Trails begin unless a bespoke trail has been arranged with you.

How big are the groups?

Surfing Group sizes vary depending on the level of ability and bookings on that particular day. Typically, tuition is provided along the industry guideline of a maximum ratio of 1:10. For 1-1 and Private Small Group Lessons it will just be you and your instructor.

Water Trails Group size will never exceed 6 at anyone time as we try to be sustainable and give consideration to others using the waterways. The minimum we can take is two put private sessions can also be arranged.

What’s included in my surf lesson or Water Trails Session?

All courses include use of all equipment and all tuition throughout the duration of your course.

Do I need to hire equipment?

All equipment hire is provided free of charge during your surfing or SUP lessons with us. Click Here

Can I bring my own surfing or SUP equipment?

If you have your own surfboard or stand up paddleboard, or wetsuit that you’d like to bring along with you please feel free to do so!

Can I keep hold of my equipment after my lesson to practice?

Equipment can be hired out after the session depending on time of day. Please look at our Hire page for prices and times.

Are there any age limits?

Surfing: The minimum age is 6 years, we cannot accept children younger than this. There is no upper age limit.

Water Trails: our minimum age is 16, again there is no upper age limit.

Do I need to be able to swim?

It’s ideal if you can swim 50 metres. If you are a non-swimmer or have limited swimming ability then please inform us upon booking so we can make additional arrangements to ensure you are looked after and we have sufficient coaching cover. Lessons are typically held in waist deep water, which make the activity safe and fun regardless of your swimming ability.

Not so Small Print

What if I miss my lesson?

If you miss one of your surf lessons due to personal reasons (social engagements, illness, fatigue, or similar) we’re not obliged to reschedule or refund your lesson.

What happens if there isn’t any surf on the day of my surf lesson?

Here at Long Line we will always try to get in the water if the surf is flat. We are lucky to offer other activities if the surf is flat on the day you booked. However flat water activities aren’t for everyone. We will always try to give you the option to call and rearrange your surf lesson. And if the surf conditions are either too small or too dangerous we will either re-arrange on the day or give a voucher that can be used to rebook (please see T&C’s). Please do not pay too much attention to the internet surf forecasting websites, our staff and coaches have years of surf forecast expertise and  forecasts can be very unreliable!

What happens if we can’t go surfing or stand up paddleboarding?

Nobody can control the weather or surf swell, so in the unlikely event we’re not able to surf or paddleboard because of dangerous surf or weather conditions, Long Line Surf School will ensure that your  lesson is either rescheduled for a more appropriate date/time, another activity is offered or the time is used constructively to learn about other aspects of the sport.
